John Constantine- Hellblazer by ATLbladerunner John Constantine- Hellblazer by ATLbladerunner
I've been meaning to do some fanart of John Constantine for some time, he's such a cool character. I was disappointed in the movie when it came out a couple of years ago. Constantine in LA speaking with a surfer boy affectation? Pleeeze. You gotta have John in a pub in merry old England tossing back a couple of pints of Guinness, smoking his Silk Cuts, and planning his next move. I went through a few different demons behind him, big mean ones, little snarky ones, but couldn't get one that I liked and gave up. This artists block can be tough at times. :( Not really a block I guess, just having other projects that I need to be working on and feeling guilty for procrastinating. ;) Hope you guys are all doing well!

this is awesome! really captures his....his self..lol. and i know this is terribly old and i haven't gone through all the comments to see if anyone actually said this but later on in the comics "this Constantine" talks about how in an alternate universe there is another Constantine just like him but with black hair and wears a black suit instead of a trench and he also lives or used to live in LA for some of his life. Which must be where they took the idea for the movie from. but this is Awesome!

I think I vaguely remember that line from the comic. But I wonder if they put that in because they were making the film? Glad you like the pic!

See, that's the guy right there. I can't think of another comic character that was altered so much from page to screen (I know they all get mucked around with a bit, but Keanu?)

Oooh, so THAT'S why I didn't like that movie. I had no idea that they changed it that much! I heard that fans hated the movie, but I figured that it was just because of Reeves.

This character is so much more believable. Perhaps some day, you'll be able to draw up a demon to your liking to add to this, since it would be a pretty fantastic addition.

Also his friend the cab driver played by Shia la-whatsisname was supposed to be an old school friend who wants nothing to do with John's shenanigans, but feels obligated to give him rides whenever he needs them because of something John did for him long ago.

Glad you like it T-O!

Yeah I know, but when studios make moves like that they piss off the fan base it had before the movie. If the movie is made properly and true to the source material those fans will be the biggest cheerleaders for a movie that otherwise will turn out to be a mediocre moneymaker(which is what happened). Ever see the Mist based on the Stephen King book? Very true to the story and the new ending was created to bring more closure to the end of the story, but otherwise it was EXTREMELY faithful to the story. I'm very opinionated about my flicks!;) Glad you like my pic of John!

i'm tired of watching unfaithful frankly shite, tired and unloving comic book to movie conversions. quite oddly the comic to movie ive enjoyed the most has to be the crow (i bet i don't have to tell you who wrote that but for peeps who don't know foolish mortals james o'barr) the graphic novel is nothing like the movie (bar the pawn shop sceene and the names of the chars) but i enjoyed them both. one of the saddist things i have seen was lobo being converted to cartoon, i'd love to see your take of him :).

You mean Lobo the bounty hunter when he was on Superman? Almost as bad as when they had Etrigan the demon on Batman (or maybe it was Justice League). Maybe I will do a pic of him!

Have you seen the trailer for the Watchmen? From the trailer it looks like several of the shots are taken directly from the graphic novel. I'm optimistic about that one! ;)

I saw the new Hellboy last weekend. It was better than the first one, but I wasn't sure if I liked the romantic subplots or not. Effects are creatures were great though!

I haven't read a lotta Lobo stuff, but I have a few of his comics around here someplace. He is definitely a cool character! Maybe I'll whip one out in the future! ;)

At least even if they just had to Americanify the film, they should have kept him a Brit. Keifer Southerland (thought not Brit) or Jude Law would have been great!

Haha..
"speaking with a surfer boy affectation" >> That's funny.
I haven't read it nor watched it - even though I have the movie at home, but I'm just not convinced enough to go through 2 hours of listening to that accent. Weird how he's meant to be from Canada eh?
but judging by the description of him, it looks like you caught his characteristics well. I really like how his shirt isn't tucked in, but he doesn't seem to give a damn. And that Guiness looks awesome too. I didn't think roughies drank that stuff - too creamy.

As long as you're not familiar with the character the movie's not too bad.

I figure he's a little disheveled from fighting back the forces of evil all day, so he's not too concerned with his appearance, he just needs a beer. ;)

I'm personally not a big fan of Guinness (a little too dark and meaty for me) but I have several friends who love the stuff!

LOL! The only man feared in Hell! :D I also considered having the ghosts of all of his dead friends that he's thrown under the bus following behind him, which they do in the comics sometimes.

SWEET!! love it, I was so totally into HB when Garth Ennis was writing it and john was my chain-smoking hero back then, I never brought myself to see the movie, just because Keanu Reeves playing JC is just so wrong on so many levels. But you so totally got him down, all dirt and smoke and beer, just perfect. I think it looks without the demonic images, just John and his pint. good work

John is such a badass. He's one of my favorite comic characters. The first storyline I read was the one where John found out he was dying of lung cancer when it was published in graphic novel form as Dangerous Habits. That was actually a subplot in the movie. As far as I'm concerned, that is the quintessential Constantine story. The movie wouldn't have been too bad if I hadn't known the character, but they should have at least had an Englishman play him. I can easily see Jude Law or Ewan McGregor in that role. Hell, even Clive Owen would have been better than Keanu. I also really liked the story that Corben illustrated a few years when Johnwas in an American prison. One of those other perfect Constantine stories. ;) Thanks for the fave!

the lung cancer story was written by Garth Ennis and, indeed, is the quintessential Hellblazer story, You should definitely pick up the trade paperback collection, totally worth it, or any one written by Ennis. The one illustrated by Richard Corben was written by Brian Azzarello, who also writes 100 bullets(and is american!!), and is also pretty badass and out in TP.
I always thought Tim Roth would have been a pretty badass JC, IMO, alas it was not to be :(
no prob on the fave

It's one of the few comics I still get on a monthly basis, along with anything Hellboy related! Unfortunately some of the stories I find a little convoluted, but when they have a good one, man oh man. ;) Ooooh, Tim Roth woulda made a good Constantine too!
